New This Month | Albums + Vids + Events

The “end of the world” is bringing tons of  new music this month  (and a lot more panhandlers with those “The End is Near” signs). With that being said, C. Since has compiled a quick list of newly released albums, videos + films, and events that will have you head nodding and tear-wiping into the New Year– or into the Apocalypse depending on where your head’s at. Enjoy!

ALBUMS

PROPOSITION-64 by DJ Rubinn

Prop 64In early December, dj/producer, Rubinn, released Proposition-64. The album is a 13-track compilation of mashups from different club bangers and twerk songs. DJ Rubinn also adds his own keys and effects to each track.

Why we love it: It’s a new twist to the club hits you normally hear on the radio. You can also vibe out to the later tracks which feature mashups from the Weeknd, Florence + The Machines, and The Dream.

Favorite track: Track 2-“Unnecessary Rounds” (A mashup of Unnecessary by Childish Gambino x SchoolBoy Q and Aint No Way Around It by Future)

LEMURIA by Gary Samurai

Lemuria The highly anticipated, Lemuria, album from Gary Samuria emerged from the Pacific on 12/12/12. The album is a conceptual project based on marine-life and the lost, ancient city of Lemuria. Gary is never one to disappoint when it comes to creativity and this album is no exception. Lemuria blends bold lyrics with a rock/hip-hop sound creating an ethereal world under the sea. Adding to the lyrical TKO, Gary produced each track on the album.

Why we love it: Lemuria represents creative freedom. Now-a-days, many emcees make references to the skies (whether they’re relating to drugs or a spiritual journey). Gary, however, has taken a different route and gone below sea level. The album cover art is also appreciated (created by Mr. Samurai himself)

Favorite track: Welcome to Acropolis!

Beasts of the Southern Wild is an independent film directed  by Benh Zeitlin. This fantasy tale takes place in a remote Bayou community called Bathtub where six-year old Hushpuppy and her father live. After a storm ravages her home and her father’s mental health deteriorates, Hushpuppy embarks on a journey to find her mother. On this poetic quest, she confronts fate, fear, and prehistoric beasts once frozen in the Arctic ice caps.

Beasts of the Southern Wild is available for sale here.

Not really a video, but Nia Keturah’s, The Prayer is an amazing track. Residing in the DMV area, Ms. Keturah has mesmerizing, southern, honey-jar vocals and smile-worthy lyrics. You can learn more about this songstress here.

LUV is another independent film starring Common and directed by Sheldon Candis. The story follows an orphaned child (Woody) who is taken into custody by his recently paroled uncle (played by Common).

In addition to his first lead role, Common is also debuting his production skills with the film. What do you guys think?
