The Newness | Boko Maru + Rejjie Snow + The Yard

An audio atom bomb dropped in January and with the death toll at a staggering thousand, C. Since took some time to recover and estimate the damage. Now that we’ve had time to reflect, we’re back and fully prepared to bless your ears with the “Newness” of February. This time, we’re traveling internationally to Toronto and Ireland, as well as introducing a mini-comedy series that you’ll be sure to enjoy.

Boko Maru

Boko Maru To start, we’re presenting you with a soulful songstress by the name of Boko Maru. Boko is a 23 year-old singer/producer from Toronto, Canada and is a member of the hip-hop tribe, Legends Gang. We’ve been keeping our eyes (and eardrums) on this bombshell for quite some time and on January 18th, Boko graced us mere mortals with the single , XXYXX About You. The cover track is produced by electro-beat maker, XXYXX, and is from Maru’s up-and-coming, self-produced album. Though the album name and release date has yet to be set, this project is sure to be effective therapy for your headphones. To stay updated with Boko, be sure to “like” her Facebook page and follow her Soundcloud. Also, for some random education, check out Bokonism”— a fictional religion, yet interesting all the same.

Rejjie Snow

Pack your suitcases—we’re headed East! Hailing from Dublin, Ireland is Rejjie Snow, a 19 year-old emcee whose sound, according to him, is a “mix between a drunken Irish guy and Charles Bukowski” (MTV Iggy). In mid-2012, Rejjie (formerly known as Lecs Luther) caught the attention of several hip-hop magazines after he proclaimed himself to be the elusive and anonymous rapper, Captain Murphy. After several frustrating weeks, sources debunked the claim, and as result, the buzz surrounding Rejjie Snow spun into high volume. In January, Mr. Snow released the music video, Lost in Empathy, a conceptual piece that highlights the mass killings of albinos in Eastern Africa. The video views reached the thousands in a matter of hourse and the next day, on January 14th, Rejjie opened for the hip-hop King of Cali, Kendrick Lamar, in Dublin. So far, it seems Rejjie Snow is maintaining a humble hold on his recent fame.  His European fan base is rooting loudly for his success and he’s gradually charming American audiences as well.

So who exactly is this “Rejjie Snow”? That’s a perfect question and one we plan to answer in an up-and-coming interview. For now, however, you can stay updated with Rejjie’s random posts and active female pursuers on his personal website as well as Twitter. Also, be sure to look out for Rejjie’s up-and-coming LP, Rejovich.

The Yard

The YardThe Hulu Network is most known for its free, online broadcasting of popular movies and shows. However, what many don’t know is that Hulu also streams original series— some of which are better than mainstream programs. Hulu’s most recent show is The Yard, a documentary-style comedy series that debuted on HBO Canada in 2011. Created by David Eddie and Michael Mabbott, The Yard is much like Disney’s Recess; however, this show is far from kid-friendly. The plot is set on an elementary school playground where the main character, Nick, and his loyal crew of 5-11 year-olds battle to maintain order among the other kids. The show is a satire of worldly events with each episode taking a 3rd-grade spin on politics, socioeconomics, drug trade and war; as well as relationships and civil rights. So far, The Yard has halted at 6 episodes, but many fans are hoping for a second season. You can check out the entire miniseries here on Hulu, and if you enjoy it, be sure to tell a friend to tell a friend. We’re excited to see where this show could lead and we’d hate to have a Freaks & Geeks repeat.
